The Largest Gathering of Pentecostal Students Comes to Oklahoma City
The largest gathering of Pentecostal students in North America will pack out Chesapeake Energy Arena and much of the Cox Convention Center during North American Youth Congress (NAYC) 2015. The event will host more than 22,000 students aged 12-25 and feature guest speakers from across North America.
“We are very pleased to host North American Youth Congress in Oklahoma City this year,” said Michael Ensey, General Youth President. “For the first time in the history of NAYC we have sold out registration badges and had to provide an overflow seating option in the Cox Arena. We are looking forward to having an incredible event this summer.”
The event will begin with an evening general session on Wednesday, August 5th, at the Chesapeake Energy Arena, and will provide a variety of split sessions and general sessions through Friday, August 7th. There will also be several auxiliary events that will take place throughout the three day event, including a social gathering for young adults at the Chevy Event Center and missions fundraising events at The Outlet Shoppes and Frontier City Theme Park. Friday afternoon many students will be gathering at the Oklahoma State Capitol for a prayer walk in support of the Ten Commandments monument on the capitol grounds.
The event is organized by the General Youth Division, a division of the United Pentecostal Church International, and will include the North American Bible Quiz Tournament in which teams will compete for Bible memorization awards. “The level of commitment to Scripture memorization by these students is astonishing,” said Matt Johnson, General Youth Secretary. “Each of these students has memorized verbatim approximately 500 Scriptures to compete at this level.”
The event will also feature an opportunity for students to serve the Oklahoma City area. Project 22:39 will feature students working alongside the parks & recreation department for a city-wide cleanup effort Friday afternoon. “Project 22:39 is based on Matthew 22:39 which challenges each of us to ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’,” said Josh Carson, Director of Promotion. “We look forward to assisting with several community projects during our stay in the area.”
The economic impact of the event is estimated at $5 million dollars and more than 9,000 hotel room nights have been allocated for this event.
